I am looking for a used JD. It would be used for light small farm work - bush hogging, box blade etc. My previous tractor was 36HP 2wd diesel and that was a little bit more than I need now. When I bought it JD made these model 650/750/850 etc. I see they are no longer made but I think somewhere in there is the one I want. Are there descriptions or specs anywhere on out of production models anywhere? As I recall some of these were made by a Japanese company. Is that correct?

These tractors were made by Yanmar. I think the 850 was aroung 28HP, 750 25HP, and 650 15HP. These are aprox. gross HP, subtract a few for PTO HP. I know the 650 is like 13HPat the PTO. ....

Actually, the 750 (which I have one btw) owner's manual says it is rated at 21.2 engine hp and 18 pto hp. The 850 is a little larger with the pto hp rated at 22.2. Not sure what the actual engine hp is but it's right around 25-26hp. My 2wd 750 weighs 1722lbs, I think, but I don't have the manual right here with me. ....

Last February, I got lucky (at least I think I was) and bought my '81 2wd 750 with 4 foot harrow and 4 foot Landpride 'hog for $5k even. The tractor had 977 hours at purchase. I am in SC, btw. It's hard to say what 750's really average, but the Farmers Used Equipment guide says Ad price for '81's is $4381 and loan value is $2908. It also gives: $4654 low, $6669 high, and $5646 for average price. So, I was in the ball park at least. Once I decided I wanted a 750, the first thing I learned is that they are hard to come by!! There are not many of these ever put up for sale. The reason (I think) is that it is such a great tractor and the right size for most small to medium chores/applications, that few people ever decide to sell them. I have since run into three people (two on the net and one who lives in my town) who have bought their 750 brand new and still have it many years later!! And have no intentions to ever sell, least that I could tell! I wish you good luck in your search.Keith ....

Thanks for the info!Another question or two. How does this compare to a little Farmall Cub as far as features and power? Cubs run around $2000 with a couple of pieces of equipment. I think horse power on a Cub is like 8?? I don't think they have 3 point hitch?Are all those JD's diesel? 3 cylinders? What kind of transmission?Boy that guy asks a lot of questions!!! ....

Stan,I have a JD 650 4wd. It's a two cylinder Yanmar diesel, 52 cubic inches, with 14.5 PTO hp, and weighs 1420 lbs. I've got a Bush Hog loader, 5 ft finish mower, 55" rototiller, and a post hole digger for it, and have Goodyear Terratires. I use it for landscaping chores mainly. It is amazing to me how much this little machine can do. If it only had 2wd, I believe it would be much more limited. I've seen other posts in the JD forum that also support this, so go 4wd if possible. If you need a slightly larger machine, the 750 and 850 offer the added horsepower with the main disadvantage (at least for mowing and landscaping) of being heavier- more ground compaction, more wheel ruts. ....

have you looked into the new 4100 20hp, 4wd, yanmar engine?nice compact tractor avail. in hydro or gear. three tire choices starting at 9950.00 ....

Stanley, I have zero experience with Cub's so maybe someone else can answer that one for you. Although, I would guess that NOT having a three point hitch would really be a huge disadvantage. The three point hitch gives you such a wide array of implements to use, I wouldn't even consider buying tractor that did NOT have one. That's my opinion though. I believe that all of the JD compact, utility, and farm tractors built in the 80's to present are diesel. Probably even earlier than that, but that goes before my time. I know that ones with Yanmar engines are diesel, anyway. As someone else said, the 650 is a 2 cyl. Yanmar All the others above it (meaning bigger) have three cylinder Yanmars. I think that most all of these are gear drive too. Not sure exactly when hydro started getting popular. Most of these built in the 80's have 4x2 (not counting reverse) speed transmissions meaning a total of 8 speeds forward and 2 reverse. They're really good tractors, though. Good luck!Keith ....
